Dodie Releases 'Intertwined' Music Video

Dodie has finally released the music video for the title track of her debut EP ‘Intertwined’, which dropped in November 2016. This the second music video to be released on Dodie’s official VEVO channel, after the video her first single, ‘Sick of Losing Soulmates’, dropped late last year.

The ‘Intertwined’ music video was conceived and directed by Sammy Paul, Dodie’s close friend whom she wrote ‘Sick of Losing Soulmates’ about. After hinting that the video would be the quite different from ‘Sick of Losing Soulmates’, which he also directed, many viewers were intrigued about what the concept of the video could possibly be.

A word of warning: the Intertwined music video is just about as different as you can get from the Sick of Losing Soulmates one.

Well, Sammy was certianly right; the video features no human actors- not even Dodie herself. It turns out that the video follows a doll couple in their complicated relationship. Like the song itself, the relationship between the dolls starts out sweet and initimate. But the video grows darker and darker, with the female doll cutting off all of her hair, sticking pins in her partner’s head and eventually setting fire to the entire dollhouse.

The latter, more violent half of the video acts as an especially sharp contrast to the softness and intimacy of the song. The use of the dollhouse and general creepiness of the video definitely give us Melanie Martinez vibes, with the addition of much more fire and gory explosions. It’s quite different from anything we’ve seen from Dodie on her main YouTube channels doddleoddle and doddlevloggle, which feature plenty of fairy lights, “dodie yellow”, and an overall softer aesthetic.

I wrote it intending to be a lil bit fucked up. Sammy captured it perfectly. I'm so pleased about the intelligent response. Thank you sm <33

Some viewers were confused or surprised that Dodie and Sammy chose to represent a seemingly gentle and sweet love song in this way. However, the visual provides an opportunity for the viewer to interpret the song in a completely different manner. Some interpret the song and video as a depiction of having a mental illness while being in a relationship, especially with the lyrics “Oh, I’m afraid / Of the things in my brain” and “Can you drink all my thoughts / Cause I can’t stand them.” Many fans love the new perspective that the video provides, and praise it for the creative representation of realistic emotions people often experience.

We certainly loved the unique direction that the video for ‘Intertwined’ took! It was a bold and creative decision on both Sammy and Dodie’s parts. We absolutely cannot wait to see what Dodie’s future music videos bring!
