Albert Okura Obituary Juan Pollo restaurant CEO and Owner

Albert Okura, who founded the popular rotisserie chicken restaurant chain Juan Pollo, died this week, longtime friends Steve Portias and Danny Castro confirmed Friday, Jan. 27.

“He’s irreplaceable,” Portias said by phone Friday. “Just a good, good guy.”

After cutting his teeth in the food industry at Burger King and Del Taco, Okura picked up the rotisserie method of cooking chicken during a trip to Mexico with friend and partner Armando Parra.

Their recipe sought to enhance a chicken’s natural flavors.

With help from his uncle, Okura opened his first Juan Pollo restaurant in Ontario in 1984 at age 32. Two years later, he opened a San Bernardino location on Fifth Street at Mt. Vernon Avenue.

Juan Pollo now has 26 Southern California locations.
